One day I got to thinking about all the steel work that we needed to install on the ship after the painting was complete. This included all the chain plates (Straps that hold up the mast upright and bow sprit in place). The normal way to do this is to have them hot dipped galvanized and then paint them.
This method is OK but I thought that there should be a better approach to this delema in the 21st Century. I started to surf the web and came up with the idea to have the steel powder coated. My main question was, could powder coating hold up to the riggers of a saft water environment?
So I got in touch with John and Debbie McGeehan of Powder Coating Inc. in Mukilteo, Washington. They filled me in on powder coating and ended up doing a superior job on all the steel. I wanted the steel to take on a bronze tone to match the port lights.
